TEAM DEVELOPMENT AND TRANSFORMATION

CREATING A MINDSET OF PROACTIVITY AND OWNERSHIP

Working with a 13-strong marketing team with a victim mentality. Poor leadership from the previous incumbent had left the team essentially treated as administrators and general lackeys by a stronger Sales team.

My approach:
  • Created the right environment to promote teamship. From simple weekly team meetings and more individual feedback sessions to establishing a culture of information sharing, shared responsibility and above all, that they could count on my support, even if they made mistakes.

  • Established clear expectations, roles and responsibilities. Explained my marketing approach, the role of marketing in delivering the overall business plan and the expectations for each of the team roles.  Importantly, encouraged and promoted the belief that every individual could make a difference.

  • Tasked the team to define their own objectives in order to achieve our goals and helped them define KPIs. Ensured regular follow-up and feedback sessions (including recognition of their efforts).

Result:
  • Established a working team with processes, clear direction and belief that their leader supported and recognised their efforts.

  • Created a better team mindset – sharing and asking each other for help, working together on problems in small groups, more involvement across the different functions.

  • Started moving the mindset away from a victim mentality – team members starting to say ‘No’ when needed, taking more ownership and proactivity in helping drive agendas, rather than merely executing requests.
